SUMMARY:Aiming for Safety: Trauma-Informed Harm Reduction\, Risk Assessment and Safety Planning
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide advocates and allied professionals with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in trauma-informed and healing- centered: harm reduction\, risk assessment\, and safety planning. \nEmphasizing self-efficacy and self-determination\, this training will highlight the importance of an intersectional approach when working with trauma-impacted individuals\, paying particular attention to vulnerable and/or rural populations as they experience higher victimization rates. \nThe presenter will also discuss various risk assessment tools and lethality indicators. She will then help participants to use these tools while working with clients to create a comprehensive plan to navigate and/or reduce harm in potentially dangerous situations. \nParticipants will learn how to create a tailored safety plan based on the individual needs of each client. DESCRIPTION:Human Centric and Healing Focused \nOver the past two decades\, there has been a growing recognition of the profound impact trauma has on various aspects of health\, mental health\, and social issues. Experiences such as sexual assault\, domestic violence\, human trafficking\, child abuse\, automobile accidents\, and natural disasters are all deeply traumatic\, often inflicting significant harm on survivors’ physical\, emotional\, spiritual\, and psychological well-being. \nWhen individuals may endure multiple traumatic experiences throughout their lives\, they may develop a range of behavioral health challenges\, including but not limited to post-traumatic stress disorder\, substance use\, depression\, anxiety\, childhood behavioral disorders\, and even psychosis or personality disorders. Each person’s response to trauma is unique\, making it essential to adopt a human-centric and healing-centered approach. This is not merely a checklist of practices or a set of open-ended questions; it is about fostering an embodied experience rooted in genuine connection. It’s reflected in how we communicate\, how we move\, and how we engage with the individual before us. \nThere is a sense of fatigue surrounding the trauma-informed paradigm. Many find it challenging to grasp its complexities\, as it transcends superficial measures. It is crucial to recognize that responses to trauma can vary widely; some individuals may show no visible signs\, while others may exhibit dramatic behaviors such as irritability\, mood swings\, anxiety\, and difficulty articulating their experiences. They may struggle with memory retention or even basic self-care. \nThis presentation will delve into the various dimensions of a comprehensive\, human-centric\, and healing-centered trauma-informed response. We will cover essential topics such as staff training and support\, the importance of physical environments\, cultural safety and intersectionality\, policy development\, case management\, assessment\, and the prevention of vicarious trauma. We will explore different models\, including the Sanctuary Model and the Addiction and Trauma Recovery Integration Model\, and examine the physiological and neurological effects of trauma on the brain. \nAdditionally\, we will discuss the Human Centric Interview to capture the nuances of these complex experiences. SUMMARY:How Multidisciplinary Teams Can Effectively Address the Systemic Needs of Children and Youth with Problematic Sexual Behaviors (PSB)
DESCRIPTION:Children and youth that exhibit problematic sexual behaviors (PSB) have historically been labeled\, branded\, criminalized and pathologized\, even with the best intentions.  Sexual behaviors between children can range from experimentation and exploration that is developmentally normal; to unwanted\, exploitive and abusive in nature.  Distinguishing between appropriate and problematic sexual behavior can be difficult and often warrants a comprehensive and holistic approach due to the heterogeneous make up children and youth that cause sexual harm.  Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) have long been utilized to form strategies for the sexual abuse of children by adults\, but studies show that between 25%- 40% of alleged child sexual abuse cases referred to CAC’s has been initiated by a child. MDTs often find themselves in a unique position to determine and guide services for youth with problematic sexual behavior\, but are often insufficiently prepared to determine their heterogeneous\, developmental and contextual needs. The focus of this training will be to examine how MDTs can systemically support the needs of this population and how they can form best practices for youth with problematic sexual behavior by developing policies and procedures that are empirically supported and informed.  Resources and decision aids developed by NCA’s Problematic Sexual Behaviors work group will be reviewed and explained. SUMMARY:Washington Statewide Forensic Interview Peer Review
DESCRIPTION:Peer review is an opportunity for forensic interviewers across the state to review forensic interviewing techniques for cases involving suspected child abuse. Peer review provides a space for thorough discussion and interview feedback as well as overview of relevant research in the field of forensic interviewing. In addition\, meetings provide opportunity for networking with other forensic interviewers in the field and peer support across the state. \nPeer review is for Forensic Interview Specialists and MDT Partners who completed a 32-hour basic forensic interview training (CAIA or another nationally recognized training) and conduct forensic interviews as part of their work. \nPeer review is held on a quarterly basis from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM. \nRegister HERE! \nQuestions?
