Sexual exploration and play are a natural part of childhood sexual development and help children not only to learn about their own bodies, but about the social and cultural rules that govern sexual behavior.
Some childhood sexual behaviors, however, indicate more than harmless curiosity. In some cases, sexual behaviors pose a risk to the safety and well-being of the child and other children in his or her world.
Intervening early and appropriately works to reduce revictimization as well as mitigate the negative impact on all youth and families involved. With appropriate and effective interventions, most youth can learn to make better choices and be contributing members of society. The most comprehensive treatment services for youth with problematic or illegal sexual behavior include family- and community-based interventions.
This section includes resources and information to support parents and caregivers, family members, and professionals in understanding and responding to children and youth exhibiting problematic sexual behaviors.
CACWA works with CACs and multidisciplinary partners (MDTs) to facilitate a coordinated response to allegations of child abuse and supports professionals in the field through training, technical assistance, research, funding, and advocacy.
